Our Workshops
For a nominal fee our members enjoy the use of our spacious ground floor workshop area. Perfect for large projects, teaching classes or art lectures, the workshop is a great meeting place for visual artists. Both member and non-member instructors are welcome. This is a water media workshop exploring various water paints and supports, both traditional and non-traditional. To produce 2 dimensional art work. The class will utilize traditional products but also allow students to try other media and methods of creating their art. This will include exploring newly available support choices. This class will appeal to the new and advanced painters to experiment with other methods and try new products on the market for painting in water media. The Instructor will introduce some aquarelle pastel, crayon, pencils and inks for students to try. Students will have the opportunity to use new water media supports i.e. yupo paper, magnesia core and art board. (Extra supply charges will apply). Students should bring their own art usual water media supplies paints, brushes, equipment and supports, (paper, canvas board or stretched, or other). These may include watercolour (tube or cake), gouache, aquarelle pastels and crayons, inks, as well as acrylics any fluid, tube, sludge and heavy body.

This is an introduction into the world of painting on silk. You will be taught how to stretch your silk, use gutta and dyes to create a one of a kind piece. Drawing experience necessary.
Students need to bring to their first class: A stretcher bar (or old wooden frame), no larger than 16 x 20”, Masking tape (not Dollar store brand), paint brushes, clean plastic containers, paper towels, Q-tips, coarse salt, inspirational material, either your own pictures or from magazines. Empty spice jars and pencil for drawing. A large brown “bubble pack” self addressed stamped envelope to return silk artwork.
You will be able to finish at least one wonderful piece before the end of our workshop.

WEEK 1 – drawing in black and white and colour, based upon different word themes – feelings or actions. Introduction to painting materials.
WEEK 2 – painting with a limited palette chosen intuitively and used expressively.
WEEK 3 – painting with suggested themes or ideas as a starting base for expressive painting.
Venture into methods of abstraction.
WEEK 4 – painting with no end result in mind.
Just start and have a conversation with the canvas. See where it wants to go. Let your expressiveness out. Non-objective or pure abstraction.

It is not necessary to have all of these supplies for the first class. Bring what you can.
Small sketchbook and sketching pens.
Pencils and assorted erasers.
Large solid water container with handle (4 litre size).
Latex or non-latex gloves.
Barrier cream for skin protection (optional).
Absorbent paper towels.
Small colour wheel (optional).
2 plastic shower liners or tablecloths, (for table and floor under table).
Painting apron or smock.
Package of baby wipes for quick clean-ups.
Murphy`s Oil Soap for cleaning brushes.
Favourite brushes – a few cheap synthetic brushes from hardware store – 1 inch, 2 inch, 3 inch.
Smaller brushes for detail – one flat, one round – not too small.
Large palette paper or Styrofoam meat trays to use and toss.
Small spray bottle for misting paints.
Two medium-sized palette knives – one pointed tip for paint application; one oval tip with spring for mixing paint.
Liquitex Glazing Medium – medium size – up to 946 ml or half this size.
Jars of paint are preferable. Bring large tubes if you have them.
Most brands are acceptable. Rheotech is the least recommended of student quality brands.
Liquitex and Golden are very good brands. Buy what you can afford.

DESCRIPTION & MATERIALS:
In this workshop you will be taught how to control blending and how to define areas as well as different techniques including advance shading techniques. You will need to bring three or more clear photos of your choice to the first class as well.
Some drawing experience is required.

Course Description:
Henny will guide you through a different approach with water colour. This is not the traditional style of water colour painting but rather a more loose and unique format. What is called a “negative approach” of painting is by far a positive experience that will in lighten and inspire you. By using only basic colours and minimal supplies you will paint from behind an object that you create and bring that shape forward in your artwork.
No formal art experience necessary. This is a very inexpensive Water Colour workshop with great results.
Materials to bring:
• flat board plastic or wooden to mount paper
• Water colour paper 140 lb or a paper block
• Different size Filbert brushes (are the best) or whatever you have. Preferably brushes that come to a point!!
• Windsor Newton paints: any bright yellows, pinks, blues,

Monotype / Mono-printing:
In the class we will develop prints, using water based media (watercolour, water soluble crayon, pencils or graphite which we layer on Plexiglas and vinyl plates. Susan will demonstrate basic techniques using each of the image making tools and the use of stencils, masks and multiple plates. Using damp print making paper, you will run the plate through the press at Beaux-Arts to make surprisingly beautiful and unique prints. Susan will demonstrate basic set up for print making as well as care of the press and blankets.
Materials: Pentel water colours; Caran D'Arche crayons (or Aquarelle); print-making paper which you can soak (BFK Rives, Rising Stonehenge), Plexiglas plates if you have them.

Figurative Abstraction
This exciting 2-day workshop (suitable for all levels) will develop your ability to abstract from the human form, see shapes in the figure more clearly, develop more satisfying compositions that include the draped and undraped body, and develop a looser, freer approach to painting the figure.

In this course we will develop our drawing skills further by delving into perspective drawing, measuring for more accuracy, observing the shapes of lights and shadows, and the portrait. We will continue to use gestures, blind drawings and the drawing of shapes learned in the first course as warm ups. You will continue to relax and delight yourself with the fun of accomplishment as well as the process of getting there. Drawing soothes the soul. This course is a continuation of the first one, but is not too advanced for someone new to join in.

Life Drawing
This 2-day life drawing workshop (suitable for all levels) will focus on the importance of gestures and other observational drawing exercises. It will offer projects to help you learn to draw what you see and will open the door to more challenging processes and materials to help you develop your personal expression and mark-making based on the human form. Projects will range from simple observational drawing of the figure to sustained renderings of shadows and form.

DESCRIPTIONS:
PART 1: DESIGN BASICS - The instructor will provide examples of twelve design compositions in black and white and in colour. Students will have the opportunity to experience the process by creating some small paintings in black and white and in a limited palette of a few colours. Principles and Elements of Design will also be discussed, referencing paintings by other artists.
Beginners and advanced artists will both benefit from this knowledge
PART 2: COLLAGE - This introduction to collage will include a brief review of what has been done by other artists in the past, what is being done by contemporary artists and mostly, what can be experienced by adults new to the world of art as well as those more experienced. In a friendly and fun atmosphere, the teacher will guide each student in exploring various approaches and techniques of collage.
PART 3: ABSTRACTIONS- This class will develop a different way of see towards lateral abstraction of tradition visual objects and subjects. While intuitive and loose methods may be utilized, students will be required to apply their design elements to produce harmonious compositions for finished 2 dimensional paintings. Water media watercolour, guaoche, acrylic, pastels or crayon may be used with graphite, conte, pencil crayon and other mixed media materials.. Class critiques will take place at the end of session(s). It is recommended that students bring a minimum of 2 small stretched canvases, watercolour or acrylic paints and painting equipment to create geometric and/or abstract finished art pieces. Instructor will bring various additional materials for students to try or experiment with incorporation of their finished art pieces. Bring also a sense of adventure to try new things and enjoy creative explorations.

Drawing is a way of seeing that anyone can learn. Come and learn the basic skills with such whimsical fun concepts as blind drawing, upside down drawing, gestures, drawing the spaces instead of the forms etc. Drawing opens up the subconscious mind to new ways of thinking and feeling and draws on your intuitive side. We will also touch on using marks in pencil to express your feelings. This course is for total beginners and promises to get you seeing as an artist sees and breaking down mental barriers that prevent you from relaxing into the fun and freedom of drawing and expressing yourself.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
- Introductions and set up of parking lot buddy. Talk about the materials to be/or have purchased. Cover the course, demonstrate how I prepare paper for painting and show possible alternatives. Demonstrate the basic brush strokes I use in watercolour painting.
- - Look at practice strokes of the group and maybe more demonstrations. Talk about choosing subject matter and what to leave out of the reference material. Cut a frame from a 2” x 3” mat board and demonstrate how to use it. Do a demonstration.
- - Carry over of last week by introduction of talk and demo of perspective drawing.
- - This session is about colour and how to identify it and how to mix it (I will have talked about adding colours). We will do a colour wheel so you will get an idea of how to mix. Plus we will build a grey scale.
- - Over the last four weeks I will suggest the idea of picking a simple piece to paint tonight. I will first do a demonstration.
- - We will start a snow scene together and paint until the evening ends.
- - We will discuss snow scene problems, and then paint a Misty scene together.
- - We will discuss Mist scene problems, and then paint a water reflection together.
